Hello Hawthorne parents,
We have plans for a reinvigorated garden, and are looking for parent volunteers to help get things off the ground. We’ve also created a simple and brief survey intended to gauge initial interest in the project, gather some ideas, and to help us determine directions forward. Just to provide a little context, the garden idea came out of the Big Idea Committee (BIC). The BIC is made up of parents and teachers and one of our goals is to add to what students are learning about environmental issues, by introducing some fun activities and events to the classroom and school. (Watch this website and our Facebook page for more of these activities in the new year).
Local food production in the form of a school garden fits within this framework. So a group of parents, teachers and administrators at Essex and Hawthorne schools have been discussing how to best go about it. The initial ideas include cleaning up the space, building some new raised beds, planting vegetables and herbs, building a compost bin, and integrating the garden into the schools’ curriculum. This effort will require participation from the whole Hawthorne/Essex community including the administration, teachers, parents, students, the day care, and the custodial staff.
We’ve created a simple and brief survey intended to gauge initial interest in the project, gather some ideas, and to help us determine directions forward. Please take two minutes to complete it. You’ll see that there’s also an opportunity to identify how you might like to participate in the garden’s evolution. In the next few weeks, we’ll continue to remind you about the survey, and to post specific volunteer needs on the blog (like grant writing, research needs, connecting with potential partners in the community).

We look forward to receiving your feedback!
