Thank you for a great response to our first round of afterschool programming. We’ve been running the KINDERart program on Thursdays and the Chess Club on Wednesdays with over 20 students in each. The vendors tell us this is great turnout for a school of our size.
Our plan for spring 2020 was to continue with KINDERart and Chess as well as relaunch EXPLORUM cooking and EXPLORUM science in French. However, after discussions with school administration we’ve decided to postpone a decision on our Spring 2020 programming until after March break.
This decision is solely related to the labour dispute, the difficulty running programs in this environment and potential inability to find space for make up classes. The feedback we are receiving on the programming itself is very positive.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions. Otherwise, stay tuned after March break for an update on Spring 2020 programs! At the very least we plan to bring programs back for Fall 2020.
We’ve got some great Hawthorne gear for sale to keep you and your kids warm and easy to spot this winter: T-shirts, hoodies, hats, and blankets!
Sales support the Grade 5/6 students for their trip to Montreal this Spring. Our grade 5/6 students go on a three day trip each year. They alternate between Montreal in the Spring and the following year they attend Toronto Island school in the Fall. Students experience each of these trips either in the 5th or 6th grade.
The Montreal trip provides an opportunity for students to use some of the French skills they have acquired from Hawthorne’s extended French curriculum. The Toronto island school’s outdoor education program allows students to partake in various programs relating to the environment and team building.
This year students will be going to Montreal.
The Montreal trip costs $450 per student. The Hawthorne II parent council has pledged to subsidize $200 (fundraising dollars) per student for the trip. (Thank you Hawthorne II Parent Council!) The Grade 5/6 parents are responsible for doing additional fundraising to facilitate these subsidies.
Please support our students and wear your school pride with Hawthorne Merch printed by Hardboiled Inc.

This holiday season please consider donating one (or parts) of these two kits described below in support of the Christie Refugee Welcome Centre.
a) FIRST NIGHT KIT
Every family arriving at Christie receives a kit filled with personal care items. If you’d like to put together a kit please keep in mind that we serve more women than men. Families share the washroom on their floor so hygiene items should fit in the shower basket for easy transport. Residents access language, immigration and other services across the city by public transport, a presto card is a wonderful gift.
$25 PRESTO card
b) FIRST HOME KIT
As refugee families move out of the Christie Shelter into local neighbourhoods
the high cost of living can make it hard to make ends meet. Grocery gift cards are one of the ways we support families in distress.
$25 Grocery Gift Card
Reusable Grocery Bag
Boxes will be beside the holiday tree in the entrance of our school starting this week until December 19th. Gift cards may be left in an envelope labelled Christie Refugee Fundraising in Tracey’s (the Hawthorne) office.
