Holiday Drive for Christie Refugee Centre

The Social Justice Committee is a joint effort of members of the parent community from both Hawthorne and Essex. This Holiday Drive is one of their initiatives.

This holiday season please consider donating one (or parts) of these two kits described below in support of the Christie Refugee Welcome Centre.

a) FIRST NIGHT KIT

Every family arriving at Christie receives a kit filled with personal care items. If you’d like to put together a kit please keep in mind that we serve more women than men. Families share the washroom on their floor so hygiene items should fit in the shower basket for easy transport. Residents access language, immigration and other services across the city by public transport, a presto card is a wonderful gift.

  • $25 PRESTO card
  • Shower caddy
  • Flip Flops
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Lotion
  • Body wash
  • Deodorant
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrush

b) FIRST HOME KIT

As refugee families move out of the Christie Shelter into local neighbourhoods

the high cost of living can make it hard to make ends meet. Grocery gift cards are one of the ways we support families in distress.

  • $25 Grocery Gift Card
  • Reusable Grocery Bag
  • Rice
  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Salt

Boxes will be beside the holiday tree in the entrance of our school starting this week until December 19th. Gift cards may be left in an envelope labelled Christie Refugee Fundraising in Tracey’s (the Hawthorne) office.

Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Essex & Hawthorne!

The Book Fair will be set up in the library and in the foyer on concert nights.  Monday to Wednesday, December 16–18

This is an opportunity to peruse and buy Scholastic books directly.

We are looking for parent volunteers to be cashiers. Our Librarian Sheila will have everything set up–all you need to do is handle the money and you can chit chat about books if you want.

Please contact Sheila if you can be a cashier for any time slot:

3:00-4:00

Dec 17 Tuesday
3:00-4:00

Dec 18 Wednesday

Le Marché d’Hiver: Vendor submission deadline extended until Friday, November, 22nd!

We are still looking for vendors for Le Marché d’Hiver. Do you bake, knit, or make crafts? Why not get busy, make things as a family, and set up a table at Le Marché?

Keep it simple or make it sassy! You do not need to be an established business or have any prior sales experience. In fact, extended family are welcome to vend as well.

Got a crafty grandma/grandpa, aunt/uncle, sister of brother? Why not encourage them to join and make some extra money! So far we have 9 vendors. We were hoping for at least 6 more. We would prefer to keep it simple and not open the vendor option to outside businesses beyond extended family and close friends.

To vend at Le Marché please contact Cyndi cynduck@gmail.com
Hope to see you at Le Marché d’Hiver Thursday, December 5th | 5-8 pm | in the east gym
