By combining social justice efforts, environmental awareness, and community involvement into a single approach, The Big Idea Committee provides parents and teachers the opportunity to work together to bring these elements into the classroom. The impetus for the committee is to give all students a focused “alternative” component to their Hawthorne II experience, while deepening their understanding of one specific issue in an interdisciplinary way.
The Big Idea Committee consists of two coordinators, parents and teachers. In its first year, it was decided that the committee should change focus every three years with the objective being that the theme/concept has time to become well-integrated into school life and thinking. Thanks to parent and teacher participation, the committee supports environmentally positive/social justice initiatives throughout Hawthorne II both in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities.
Some of the events planned for the 2012-13 school year (some to be confirmed) include: the Eco-School kick-off on October 18, TRCA’s Watershed on Wheels in-school workshops for Grades 1, 2 and 3, Wattwize – an energy conservation campaign for senior grades, Foodshare’s “The Big Crunch”, compiling a resource kit for teachers, and a vegetable garden.
