On Friday November 2, the grade 3s had a fun fill day at the BrickWorks. We started with a beautiful hike in the valley and then we built amazing animal shelters using raw materials found in the area. It was so much fun! La Francophonie Mondiale

A school wide expo! Teachers and students have been working hard on projects that showcase Francophone countries from around the world. Explore France! Haiti! Burkina-Faso! Classes will visit throughout the afternoon. Families are invited to a self-guided tour of the work located in the West Gym. Please enter through the outside doors only.

On Monday September 24, the students in Rm 303 went to High Park. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon. We learned about different types of soils and we went on a hike to collect samples of woodland, wetland and savannah soils. It was a lot of fun!

We are currently looking for class reps for every grade except Catherine Cyr’s 2/3 class. A class rep serves as a liaison between teachers and parents (helping to find volunteers for class trips, sending reminders from the teacher out to class parents etc.) and also as a liaison between parents and the parent council (attends parent council meetings and lets class parents know about relevant issues that are discussed; passes along important dates, reminders etc.) This is an important role as teachers and parent council depend on the class rep to share/distribute timely information to class parents. Please note that this role can be shared between two parent volunteers.

On April 19th, the grade 3 students from Rm. 303 spent a fantastic day at the Brickworks. We hiked through the valley and walked around the old quarry learning about all the brick making that this area was famous for in the last century. In the afternoon the students were divided in two teams and they were asked to build a shelter for a fox and another shelter for beaver. What great team work they all showed and how impressive their shelters were! A fox or a beaver couldn’t have done better! Have a look!
And still we skate. Many Hawthorne classes have been taking advantage of the mild winter weather and going skating at Christie Pits rink. What a delightful way to spend the afternoon. We’ve been 3 times, and have 3 more outings scheduled if the ice holds, every Friday until March Break. A big thank you to all the volunteers and snack donations. We can’t do these wonderful activities without your help.
As part of their study of Pineer Life in Upper Canada, the grade 3s spent a day at the Century Schoolhouse where they reenacted what it was like to be a student back in the 1890s. They sure were in for a treat…..and a few surprises! Who knew school could be so much fun back then….well, if you followed all the rules that is! If not, as a few students found out, discipline was a little harsh back then…

A reminder that on Tuesday December 6, Room 303 will spend the day at The century Schoolhouse. We will be leaving the school at 8:45am in order the be there on time for the programme to begin at 9:30. If you drop your child at the daycare, please let them know that the children shoul be allowed to come to the classroom at 8:40 on that day. Last week I sent a little package home outlining the schedule as well as a dressing up option for the day and a suggested lunch. We will have pictures to post on this blog following the visit.
