Toronto Public Health: Eye See Eye Learn for JK Students

Attention Parents/Caregivers of Children in JK (born 2014)

Is your child currently in Junior Kindergarten and has not had their vision checked this year by an Optometrist?  Be sure to book an appointment by June 30th to take advantage of the Eye See Eye Learn program.  Students born in 2015 and starting JK in the fall can participate any time after July 1st 2019.

Eye See Eye Learn® is a program through the Ontario Association of Optometrists that provides an eye exam and a free pair of eye glasses if required.  Find a participating  Optometristnear you.

Calling all Gardeners!

Autumn’s the season to plan and prepare gardens for the following year, so we’re organizing a general meeting for an evening in early October. If you have ideas, know-how or would like to get your hands dirty, please email and we’ll make sure you’re in the loop.

Have you had a chance to check out the amazing school garden? With the help of parent and teacher volunteers, the garden was watered and weeded over the summer and as a result, we’ve enjoyed an amazing crop of tomatoes, herbs and fruit! Thanks to TD Friend of the Environment for financial support, and to Fiesta Gardens who donated valuable supplies.

Volunteer Piano Players Needed for Choir and Music Classes

Our music program needs volunteer piano players who can read music and accompany the choir. This could be a regular gig or a when-you-are-available kind of thing.  Jessica Arshinoff, our music teacher, would also be happy to have piano players in some of my music classes as well.  Contact Jessica for more details about the schedule or email and we will put you in touch with her by email.

Welcome Hawthorne Families!

Hello and Welcome from the Hawthorne Parent Council Chairs

We’d like to take this opportunity to welcome new parents to Hawthorne and to say welcome back to returning parents. As Chairs of the Hawthorne Parent Council we want to share information about upcoming events and activities for the coming year, and to encourage you to get involved in the Parent Council as well as the many fun activities and events planned for the coming school year.

The Hawthorne Parent Council works to enrich the experience of our students and to provide opportunities for parents and families to be an active part of the Hawthorne community.  The spirit of our school is founded on strong parent engagement through all kinds of volunteer contributions. We’d like to encourage you to get involved in the Parent Council and identify how you will contribute to and support our school community. Commitments can be a small as a couple of hours to support individual activities or events. You’ll find more information in this package about some of these opportunities, and more information on volunteer opportunities will be made available via the school blog. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact us at or leave a note for us in Joan’s office. We are counting on your help to sustain a dynamic and collaborative learning environment.
